How to read this stock heatmap

Color shows the reported daily percentage price change, not the dollar change. A deeper red or green indicates a larger move; gray means unchanged or no change data, as labeled. Signed percentages and the stock list let you read the moves without relying on color.

On larger screens, tile area represents each company’s share of the displayed market cap, with space reserved for sector labels. On small screens, tiles have equal size for readability. Choose 30, 100, or 250 stocks, then filter that selection by sector. Only active tickers with a positive price and market cap in the latest snapshot qualify. Missing sector labels appear under Other / unclassified.

All stocks in a snapshot share the displayed date. This is a view of available stocks, not the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, or a complete market index. A daily move alone is not a buy or sell signal.

Data source and update schedule

Price, daily change, market cap, and sector data come from the public US-Stock-Symbols dataset. TickerPosts stores daily snapshots and reads the latest one for this page. An open tab checks for newly available stock data every minute. The source is end-of-day data; weekends, market holidays, and collection delays can leave an earlier snapshot in place. Read the data sources and limitations.

Stock market heatmap questions

What is a stock market heatmap?

A stock market heatmap is a visual map of stock performance. Each tile represents a stock, its color shows the daily percentage price change, and its area on larger screens reflects market capitalization. Grouping stocks by sector makes it easier to see where gains and losses are concentrated.

What do red, green, and gray mean on this heatmap?

Green means a stock gained in the reported daily snapshot, and red means it fell. Gray means the price was unchanged or percentage-change data is missing; the label distinguishes the two. Signed percentages and the stock list provide the same information without relying on color.

Which stocks are included?

The default view shows the largest 100 available active US-listed tickers by market cap. You can choose 30 or 250 and filter that selection by sector. A ticker must have a positive price and market cap in the latest snapshot to qualify, so the available count can be lower than the selected limit.

Is this a Dow Jones or S&P 500 heatmap?

No. This heatmap ranks the stocks available in TickerPosts daily data rather than following Dow Jones Industrial Average or S&P 500 membership. Selecting 30 stocks does not turn it into a Dow heatmap. The displayed universe can change when the daily data is updated.

How often does the stock heatmap update? Is it live?

The heatmap uses the latest stored end-of-day stock snapshot and displays its date. It updates when TickerPosts daily stock data is refreshed; an open tab checks for newly available data every minute. These checks do not make the prices real-time. Weekends, holidays, and source delays can leave the previous snapshot in place.

Where does the heatmap data come from?

Prices, daily percentage changes, market caps, and sector labels come from the public US-Stock-Symbols dataset used across TickerPosts. All stocks shown together use the same snapshot date. Missing sector labels appear as Other / unclassified, and missing daily changes are labeled No change data.
